Food, whether I'm indulging in it through the refined culinary experiences l've been fortunate enough to have or just sitting down to a casual family meal with my staff, is nourishment, culture, and memories wrapped up into one. Cooking Thai food is a way of seeing the world through my mom's eyes and is now a creative outlet for me to express myself-all while having fun and keeping my ancestors' recipes alive.
Working on this cookbook became not only a means for me to better understand myself as a Thai American, but also functions as a method of wading through grief and healing. I could not have written this book without my mom. For this reason, this cookbook is a culmination of my mom's legacy—a timestamp of who I was when my mom raised me and the foods she fed me, and a community, to help us grow. Although she is no longer here physically, I feel her presence every time I cook and remain connected to her through our shared recipes and stories.

Yes! International Market is a tribute restaurant to my parents’ original spot that opened in 1975. I still have some aunties that have cooked for our family from the beginning (before I was born). During the day, we feature mom’s original casual steam table items and at night I play in the kitchen with my team creating Thai dishes, my way. Many of these recipes are in this book.

Well, you’ll soon find out that Pad Thai isn’t one I’ll be featuring, but for a reason. There are so many Thai flavors and inspirations worth celebrating and I’m here to share dishes that have impacted my life with you. Some recipes are technical and elevated while others are fun and quirky like “Yum Mama”. It’s a Thai instant ramen noodle salad that transports me back to my days living in Bangkok as a young adult when I’d snack on this dish as I stumbled home from the pubs.
